According to the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) there are 68,000 women living in Sweden who have been subjected to FGM and up to 23,000 women are at risk.
How do we stop female genital mutilation? For over 30 years, ActionAid has been working to prevent and stop the practice of FGM in several countries in Africa. Since 2016, the organisation also works actively with this issue in Sweden. The work in Sweden is based on providing support and advice to girls and women living here who have been or are at risk of being subjected to FGM. The work also includes training healthcare professionals who come into contact with these girls and women in various ways.
Listen to Aurégan Le Gal who coordinates ActionAid’s work against FGM in Sweden.
